Master Trumpeter's Background

Born into an Air Force family, trumpeter, David B. Hooten was born in Frascati, Italy, and grew up in various cities in the United States and Europe. He began studying music at the age of ten under the tutelage of trumpet instructor Merle Brandon in Duncan, Oklahoma. By the time he was eighteen years old he had already established himself as a versatile professional in the music world.

As a scholarship student, David received his degree in music education from North Texas State University, where he studied with Dr. Leonard Canderlaria. Two years later he earned his Masters in music performance from the University of Oklahoma. Throughout his career David has had the distinct honor of studying with such music masters as Don Jacoby, Jim Pandolfi of the New York Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Bert Truax of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. In 1989 David joined the trumpet section of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and remained for five seasons until he left to pursue his solo career.

David is currently a trumpet soloist residing in Oklahoma City. His busy schedule includes over 150 appearances across the country as guest trumpet soloist in recitals, with various orchestras, and as studio musician. A noted performance was as the guest soloist with the Mormon Youth Orchestra and Choir in the Mormon Tabernacle. David played to a capacity crowd and received a standing ovation for his performance of the Haydn Trumpet Concerto in E Flat. He also received a standing ovation for his encore rendition of "Amazing Grace", which he performed with their 300-voice choir.

While the trumpet is his forte, David's talents extend beyond the instrument. As a composer/producer he established D.B.H. Productions, Inc. in 1989 and has produced numerous albums for various musicians and groups. In addition he has composed many successful commercial jingle campaigns for advertisers nationwide. He has also been responsible for composing musical scores for local and national television news promotions and specials; and in December 1988, he traveled to Reggio Emilia, Italy, where he composed the musical score for Italy's first Broadway-styled musical, "Christmas", which premiered on December 22, 1989 in Bologna, Italy.

In May of 1989, David realized a life-long dream by releasing his first solo album, "The Trumpet Shall Sound". Produced on his own label (D.B.H.Productions, Inc.), the album gained respect from many critics, especially for his soulful rendition of "Amazing Grace". His second album, "The Trumpets of Christmas", was released in December of 1989 and was equally well received. In response to the success of his first two albums, David released "Trumpets of Glory", an hour of gospel music in March of 1990.

David appeared on March 17, 1990 as guest soloist with the East Texas Symphony Orchestra, performing the "Conti Trumpet Concerto" with guest conductor,Bill Conti of "Rocky" fame.

In November 1993 Mr. Hooten traveled to Thailand to be the guest artist with the Thailand National Symphony for Thailand's gala event of the year, the Queen's 60th Birthday, hosted by the Thai National Foundation.

In March of 1995, David released his fourth album "On the Classical Side". It is classical and contains works of Haydn, Hummel and Faulconer. Doc Severinsen is quoted saying "I know you'll be able to hear special qualities in his work".

On April 19, 1996 David had the honor of performing "Amazing Grace" as soloist with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and the Ambassadors Choir and Canterbury Choral Society to open the Memorial Ceremony for the victims of the Oklahoma City bombing. Vice President Gore attended and the ceremony was broadcast around the world.

In August of 1996 David had the pleasure of performing the National anthem at a new York Yankee's game in Yankee Stadium. The Yankees went on to win the World Series. He has also performed the national anthem at the opening game of the Dallas Cowboys football season.

In May of 1997 David teamed up with world renowned clarinetist Bob Snyder and released a Dixieland gospel album, one of a very few of it's kind ever released. The album is called "Dixieland Praise!" and is receiving rave reviews.

On Father's Day 1997, Mr. Hooten performed at the Crystal Cathedral for a captivated audience. Mr. Hooten performed "Amazing Grace" with the Crystal Cathedral world class symphony orchestra and choir. The performance was received by an instantaneous standing ovation and was broadcast internationally the following week on Dr. Schuller's "Hour of Power" television show. The response has been incredible world wide.

In October 1997, David released another recording collaboration with Bob Snyder, this time a fresh look at Christmas favorites called "A Grand Christmas" which is currently Webster Records best selling Christmas release of 1997.

Look for David to appear on the Robert Schuller's "Hour of Power" television program this year. Dates include February 8th, July 4th and November 29th1998. His featured selections on the Robert Schuller show are "Amazing Grace", "The Lord's Prayer" and a musical suite of "America". He performed "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" on the November 29th show which can be found on Trumpets Of Glory.
