Makaha Sons Of Ni'ihau- The Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau was one of the most enduring and popular groups in Hawai'i. During their seventeen years together they recorded nine albums on Poki Records. Their genesis was in Makaha in 1974, which happened after a chance meeting between Jerry Koko and Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. Israel was barely 15 at the time, and along with Jerry, his brother Skippy, Louis Kauakahi, Abraham Nahulu, Melvin Amina, and Sam Gray they formed an informal group playing at backyard parties. After their first "public gig," Nanakuli High School's May Day Program, the group chose the name their origins and reflected the Ni'ihau heritage of the Kamakawiwo'ole brothers. Their music, magnetic. Their spirit, genuinely Hawaiian. Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau captured our imaginations and our hearts from the very first time we heard them at Hank's Place. A modest, local hangout in Kaimuki, Hank's was a venue befitting their low-keyed, country informality. But what they communicated from that very minimal stage set-up was a true love affair with their audience. The album won the group its first recognition by the recording industry, the Hawai'i Academy of Recording Arts. This album marked some significant changes for the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. Leader Skippy had passed away two years earlier in 1982. Also at this time bass player Mel Amina left the group, and replacing him was founding member Jerome Koko returning after a four years hiatus. Also joining the group was John Koko, the younder brother of Jerome, on up-right bass. This led change in the group's sound, both vocally and instrumentally.
