George Winston - When I record, I never think about anything but the music itself. However, when I'm done with an album I later enjoy editing certain pieces for radio play, since a lot of where I come from musically was the great pop and jazz instrumental tunes from the late 1950's and early 1960's. I would listen to the radio for the 30 seconds before the hourly news when they would play instrumentals. The heyday of the instrumental hits was between 1956 and 1963 and the peak year was 1961, when there were thirty top 40 instrumental hits. I was also increasingly inspired by the great R&B, jazz, blues, and rock songs of the mid and late 1960s, and began playing organ in 1967 and later, electric piano. In 1971, after hearing records of the legendary stride pianists Thomas Waller and Teddy Wilson, I instantly switched to solo piano. At that time, I began working on my own type of pop instrumental music on solo piano, putting together songs of my own and arranging other pieces. The traditional pieces were chosen for their appropriateness as instrumental music for this project. They were not meant to convey any personal religious beliefs.
