RealAudio at MusicbyMail.com

MusicbyMail.com offers many sound samples to help you find just what you're looking (and listening) for. All music audio clips are indicated by the tiny speaker icon to the right of the track listing. To hear the clips, simply click on the song title. (Note: If you are a WebTV user, your system already supports RealAudio.)

What you need to hear RealAudio samples:

If your system is not equipped with a RealPlayer, you can download one at no charge below:

  • If you use a Windows-based PC (95/98/NT) with a Pentium-class processor or the Macintosh operating system, download the RealPlayer G2, the most current version of the RealPlayer. This player provides the highest sound quality available.

  • If you use Win 3.1, NT 3.5.x, or Unix, download the RealPlayer 5.0.

  • If you are a WebTV user, your system already supports RealAudio.

Troubleshooting:

Below you will find answers to several common questions about using RealAudio at MusicbyMail.com. Answers to other questions about installing and using the RealPlayer can be found on RealNetworks' Help and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page.

"I can see my RealPlayer, but I can't hear any sound."

If you use AT&T's Worldnet or are visiting Musicbymail.com from work, you may have problems connecting to our RealAudio server because of a "firewall."

Instructions directly below are for RealPlayer G2 users. Click here for RealPlayer 5.0 troubleshooting instructions

Using RealPlayer G2

  • Go to your RealPlayer G2 View menu and make sure the Normal setting has been selected.
  • Go to the Options menu and select Preferences
  • Click on the Transport option at the top of the Preferences box
  • Click the Auto Configure button located in the Network Transport section. The Automatically Select Best Transport option must be chosen in order to make this button functional.
  • Click OK to begin the auto configure process
  • Once the process has completed, click OK to exit your preferences. You should now be able to hear the contest RealAudio clip with your RealPlayer G2.

Using RealPlayer 5.0:

  • Go to your RealPlayer View menu and select Preferences
  • Click on the Transport option
  • Select the tab next to "Use HTTP only"
  • Try listening to the music clips again

If you are still unable to listen to RealAudio clips, you may also be able to set your RealPlayer to accommodate the firewall by setting it (also in the Transport area) to use UDP on a single port or TCP only. The UDP option will probably offer better sound quality, but you will need to contact your Internet service provider or systems administrator for the port number that they have configured for UDP transmissions.

If none of the above leads to a solution, you may want to ask your system administrator to reconfigure the firewall to allow streaming audio.

Our RealAudio Server communicates header information and statistics via TCP on port 7070, so this port must be open to TCP traffic in both directions. The actual media stream is transmitted using the UDP protocol, on a port between 6970 and 7170. This range of ports must be open for incoming UDP traffic.

"I've downloaded the RealPlayer, but it won't show up on my screen."

Normally when you install a RealPlayer, it automatically sets up your web browser for you. If your RealPlayer is not launched when you click on a link to a song, you will need to configure your browser for RealAudio manually.

The file-type settings for your browser are probably found in the Preferences or Options for your browser under Viewers or Helper Applications, but if you use Microsoft Internet Explorer or the AOL Browser, you may find them by double-clicking on the My Computer icon on your desktop and then choosing Options under View in your menu bar.

Here is the file-type description to enter into your browser preferences for helper applications:

  • Description: RealPlayer
  • MIME Type: audio
  • MIME SubType: x-pn-realaudio
  • File Extensions: ra, rm, ram

Find the directory into which the RealPlayer was installed, and select it as the application to launch.

If after following these steps you are still unable to listen to music clips on our site, please write back to us with as much relevant information as possible about the setup of the computer you are using to browse our site:

  • the type and version of your operating system
  • the type and version of your browser
  • the type and version of the program that you are using to listen to music clips
  • your Internet service provider (AOL, @home, etc.)
  • your modem connection speed
  • the 17-digit number that appears at the end of our URL

"The sound quality is not good. Audio clips stop and start intermittently."

This phenomenon is most likely due to traffic on either your local network or the Internet at large. The best thing to do in this situation is to try listening again later.

"I'm still having difficulties and none of this describes the RealAudio problem I'm having."

If you cannot find the information you need on RealNetworks' Help and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page, send an e-mail message to our contact page. We will be happy to assist you further.
